چکیده

We report Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure measurements at the Mn K absorption edge on hole doped manganese oxides La1ÿxCaxMnO3 in a wide temperature range above and below the metal±insulator transition temperature in presence of a magnetic field. In accordance with previous studies an anomalous increase in the Debye-Waller factors is detected at the phase transition in the first coordination shell made up of O atoms. This is due to a local structural deformation around Mn3‡ atoms associated with the Jahn-Teller effect and the formation of polarons. The application of a magnetic field results in a variation of this deformation with a thermal behaviour that closely resembles that of the magnetoresistance. This confirms the relevance of the polarons on the conductivity properties of such materials. The magnetic field has a huge effect on the second coordination shell probably related with the change of the Mn±O±Mn angle upon application of the magnetic field.

The Structure of Jahn-teller Polarons in the Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganites

The observation of large negative magnetoresistive effects has generated tremendous scientific and technical interest in the perovskite manganites and related materials. These phenomena are commonly classified under the heading “colossal magnetoresistance” (CMR) to distinguish them from magnetoresistive effects in metals and metal-multilayers. CMR effects are observed in conjunction with the fo...

Effects of lattice distortion and Jahn–Teller coupling on the magnetoresistance of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.5Ca0.5CoO3 epitaxial films

Studies of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 epitaxial films on substrates with a range of lattice constants reveal two dominant contributions to the occurrence of colossal negative magnetoresistance (CMR) in these manganites: at high temperatures (T → TC , TC being the Curie temperature), the magnetotransport properties are predominantly determined by the conduction of lattice polarons, while at low temperatures...

Effects of lattice distortion on the physical properties and surface morphology of magnetoresistive perovskite epitaxial films

The effects of lattice distortion on the physical properties of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 epitaxial films are investigated. Our results suggest that larger substrate-induced lattice distortion gives rise to larger zero-field resistivity and larger negative magnetoresistance. Similar effects are also observed in samples of different thicknesses and on the same substrate material, with larger resistivity an...

Mössbauer Effect Probe of Local Jahn-Teller distortion in Fe-doped Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganites

Local structure of the Fe-doped La1−xCaxMnO3 (x=0.00-1.00) compounds has been investigated by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy. 57Fe Mössbauer spectra provide a direct evidence of Jahn-Teller distortion in these manganites. On the basis of Mössbauer results, the Jahn-Teller coupling was estimated. It is noteworthy that Ca-concentration dependence of Jahn-Teller coupling strength is very consiste...

Polaron melting and ordering as key mechanisms for colossal resistance effects in manganites.

Polarons, the combined motion of electrons in a cloth of their lattice distortions, are a key transport feature in doped manganites. To develop a profound understanding of the colossal resistance effects induced by external fields, the study of polaron correlations and the resulting collective polaron behavior, i.e., polaron ordering and transition from polaronic transport to metallic transport...
